The Grinder , as we come to know it. Learned all close order drill on this field at MCRD San Diego, CA. To the upper right at groups of 40 Marines per Platoon. To the far right is the Obstetrical Courses and Quansen huts we spent 3 months in during Boot Camp. After Boot, we went to Camp Pendleton for a month of Infatry Training , a 20 day boot leave to come home for a bit. Which was a long bus ride for me. Then back to MCRD for Sea School for a month, You then stay in the Sea Pool to await assignment to a Marine Detachment aboard a ship. Doing Honor Guards and Military Burials in the area.
The USS Los Angeles CA 135 was a heavy cruiser built in the 40's and final decommission in 1963. I served with the Marine Detachment for it's final cruise.
